Truck Rental or Purchase: How to Compare the Real Cost

When renting makes sense

Renting suits seasonal work, a one-off project, or testing a new route. You pay for the days you need the truck and not for idle days. If starting capital is limited, renting lowers the entry barrier.

Buying suits a business where the truck works every day and freight volume is steady. The rental cost of a truck that works constantly soon exceeds the cost of buying. So the decision depends on the number of working days.

A mixed approach also exists: you haul the base load with your own truck and rent an extra one in peak demand. That keeps your own fleet from growing too large. With seasonal freight flow, this works well.

How to calculate the break-even point

The math is simple: divide monthly ownership cost by the daily rental price. The result is the break-even point, meaning the number of days per month from which buying costs less. Ownership cost includes the lease payment, insurance, maintenance, and tax.

Example (assumption): monthly ownership cost is 14,000,000 UZS and rental is 800,000 UZS a day. The break-even point is 14,000,000 divided by 800,000, which is 17.5 days. If you work more than 17.5 days a month, owning costs less.

If these numbers do not match your terms, plug in your own. Get rental prices from several suppliers. Count fuel and driver cost in both options, because without matching them the comparison is wrong.

What to check in a rental contract

Does the contract set a mileage cap, and what does extra mileage cost. Check the rental term, daily rate, and payment schedule in writing. Find out who pays for fuel.

Draw up an acceptance report when you take the truck. Photograph the body, tires, glass, and cab. If existing damage is not recorded when the contract is signed, you may be charged for it at return.

Clarify insurance and liability for damage. In an incident, how much do you pay and what does insurance cover. Write down whether a driver is included or you find one yourself. Check that commercial cargo is allowed.

Maintenance and liability

The contract should state who services the rented truck. Usually planned service is on the lessor, while daily checks such as oil level and tire pressure stay with you. Write that split down in advance.

If the truck breaks down on the road, will a replacement be provided, and does payment stop for idle days. Without answers to these, real cost rises even when rental looks cheap. Downtime eats income.

Ask about the lessor's service capacity. For a truck from an authorized dealer network, parts and service are easier to find. Service information is on faw.uz/en/services/.

Order of decisions

First estimate the number of working days from past months. Then calculate the break-even point and compare. If your days are well below break-even, choose rental, and if above, buying or leasing.

Review both options with a written calculation: starting capital, monthly payment, maintenance, and downtime risk. The decision depends on your business plan. If freight volume is expected to change in a year, factor that in too.
