Kamchik Pass in Winter: Rules and Tips for Truck Drivers

Why Kamchik matters

Kamchik Pass is the main road linking the Fergana Valley with the rest of the country. So every carrier hauling freight to and from the valley passes through it. In winter, the pass condition sets your trip time.

Weather on the pass changes fast. If it rains in Tashkent, it may snow on the pass. Do not decide on a trip from city weather alone. Check road conditions and pass information separately.

For a truck, the pass is the hardest stretch. A heavy truck overheats its brakes on the descent, and on the climb it needs power and traction. That stretch calls for special preparation.

Closures

On December 10, 2025, the Road Safety Service temporarily closed the pass because of weather. The restriction took effect at 2:30 local time: heavy snowfall and avalanche risk. The Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that traffic would reopen from 12:00.

Such a closure can last several hours. If a truck is stuck in a queue, the driver needs warm clothing, food, and a fuel reserve. Fill the tank before the trip and keep enough fuel to run the heater.

Get official updates from the traffic police and emergency ministry channels. Do not rely on unconfirmed social media posts. If the pass is closed, be ready to wait and allow extra time.

Speed and enforcement

According to a report from July 8, 2026, the pass limit for cars was cut from 100 to 80 km/h, while trucks stay at 50 km/h. Radar and photo-video enforcement operate on the stretch.

Speeding can bring a fine and penalty points. The 50 km/h truck limit applies in winter too, and on icy roads the truly safe speed can be lower. Match your speed to conditions and do not treat the limit as a target.

On the descent, drive in a low gear and use the engine brake. Pressing the service brake continuously overheats the pads and cuts braking force. Double your usual following distance.

Documents and vehicle requirements

Control rules have applied to trucks on the pass. Under a 2012 regulation, vehicle dimensions and weight are checked, the driver must show a license of the right category and cargo documents, and the waybill must carry medical and technical inspection marks.

At the checkpoint before the pass, vehicle dimensions, weight, and documents may be checked. A worn or faulty truck raises the risk of stopping on the pass, so have it checked at a service center before the trip and renew document expiry dates.

Oversize and heavy cargo may move only in daylight and under set conditions. The gross weight of a loaded truck and the axle load must stay within permitted limits. Overloading on the pass is also dangerous for the brakes.

Pass preparation checklist

Before the trip, check tire tread and pressure, brake fluid and pads, lights and wipers, and the battery. Confirm that winter-grade diesel is in the tank. Chains and a spare wheel should be on board.

Carry a blanket, a thermos, a flashlight, a warning triangle, a fire extinguisher, and spare fuel. Check phone charge and signal in advance. Start early, because crossing the pass in daylight is safer.
